A Year in Training…
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
August 26th 2006: In final preparations for my second Half-Ironman (Big Kahuna), I crashed my bike quite spectacularly on our team practice Triathlon. After a few hours waiting in the hospital, I found out I'd fractured my arm and would not be able to do my event ...

The Art of Taper…
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
With Ironman Canada just a week away, I am now into the most important phase of training, known as "Taper". This is the time when the workouts are drastically scaled down to a minimum to allow the body to finally recover and strengthen. This has been fairly restful week, no early morning or late nights but just long days with much to get ...

The Mental Toughness Ride
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
Today on the training schedule was something called a "Mental Toughness Ride", this was suppose to be a on your own self supported ride without the team. After what could be described as comedy of mishaps yesterday I ended up getting home very late, with a mere 4 hours of sleep I set out early to start my ride. However instead of just doing ...

The Triple Brick
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
This was it, billed as one of the toughest training days of the year, the 9 hour workout! Last year the team had suffered as it was during a heat wave, so the stories had certainly made me nervous, but it also made me go in prepared with lots of fluid to keep me hydrated. Our starting point was Edgewood and Canada, that ...

Iron Team East Bay Century
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
A day of misdirection, I never get last when I know where I am going :-) However I'm not to familiar with the far off land known locally as the "East Bay". Getting to the ride start was my first first challenge of the day, the map I had printed off wasn't entirely clear on the street name where the final turn was not ...

Canada Rd to Mount Eden
by Nick @ "The last crazy thing I did"
The Ironteam meet at 8am at Edgewood and Canada Rd, to start out the 72 mile ride generally flat ride with a medium grade. We started off heading north on Canada Rd, continuing past 92 on to Skyline which passes by Sawyer Camp, and then turn on Crystal Spring Rd, which has a great downhill as you start into it. The route loop ...
