June 19-25: And the hits just keep on coming …
by Mrs. D @ catching the paper boy
Have I mentioned that my swim has been plagued lately by an inability to rotate? Maybe I’ve talked about my pesky QL pain. There can’t be a person out there who doesn’t know about my completely useless right knee surgery. As I’ve said before: Injury loves an imbalance, and it truly loved me this week.
The week started well enough with a 2700-yard swim and a trip to the gym for a power lift on Tuesday. By Tuesday night, I was basically immobilized by pain in my left IT. The one good take-away from the knee surgery was an Rx for Darvocet, which came in handy as I attempted sleep on Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, the pain was a little less severe, and I had an appointment with Chainsaw Dave for some deep-tissue massage.
Dave comes to massage by way of general construction contracting. He’s got strong hands and he’s not one to back down in the face of whimpers. I thought the beastmasters at SMI were tough, but Dave’s ability to find and loosen tight tissue is beyond painful. Though, I’d still rate the overall pain no higher than nine, seeing as how I never actually passed out.
By Friday, I was able to put in a swim, 2700 yards and the best swim I’ve had in weeks. The pain in the IT was still there, but it wasn’t rendering me completely useless. Saturday was even better, and I did a swim/gym combo, using my bike to spare our hot SiliValley air. 3000 yards, power lift, 10 miles on the bike.
Sunday was another scorcher, but I managed to keep myself somewhat cool under an EZ-Up at Edgewood & Canada. The Team had a double-/triple-brick workout. Quote of the day, “Darn, there are three guys still out running and I only have two croissants,” came from Stef (AKA: the best SAG ever) who brought a near-fest to the event. Happily, she’s joining the Team next year. As a whole, the Team looked great, and there were lots of smiles (even from the croissantless ones) at the finish.
In Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, seven of our Teammates did IMCDA. Five finished, and two DNF’d. As I am also a member of the elite IMDNF crew, my heart goes out to them. From what I can tell from the numbers, they were absolutely excelling until it was time to leave the course. My hat’s off to all of our IMCDA Teammates.
